La Conchita is a small seaside community along Highway 101 south of Santa Barbara. This landslide and debris flow occurred in the spring of 1995. Many people were evacuated because of the slide and the houses nearest the slide were completely destroyed. This area also experienced debris flows which damaged a banana plantation. No one was killed or injured. For photos of the more recent, 2005 La Conchita Landslide please see this photo album: http://landslides.usgs.gov/learning/photos/california__u.s._/the_2005_la_conchita__california_landslide

  • View of the La Conchita landslide taken January 14, 2005. The light–colored, exposed rock in the upper part of the photograph is the main scarp of the 1995 slide. The southeast part of the 1995 deposit (right side of photograph) remobilized in 2005. At the bottom center of photograph, a wall built after the 1995 slide is visible; the 2005 slide overtopped and tilted parts of the wall forward (photo by Randy Jibson, USGS). Please see the image collection titled, "The 2005 La Conchita, California Landslide" for more images of the 2005 landslide at La Conchita.
