As part of an effort to better understand initiation, erosion, and entrainment processes for runoff-initiated debris fl ows, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) began monitoring four debris fl ow producing basins in central Colorado in 2004.

  • The steep, bedrock-dominated fl anks of the formerly glaciated Chalk Creek Valley near Nathrop, Colorado, generate an average of two runoff-initiated debris flows per year, making the valley an ideal natural laboratory for debris-flow research.  Photograph by Jeff Coe, USGS.
